Jr. WUI Workforce Readiness Program

Program Overview

The Foxfire Jr. WUI Workforce Readiness Program focuses on developing the next generation of wildland firefighters with suppression, prevention and planning objectives in mind. By the end of the program, students will be certified as Wildland Firefighters (Type 2) and ready to enter the workforce. Unlike other programs, this curriculum also focuses on equipping students with working knowledge of prevention and planning activities, further exposing them to the growing wildland industry and helping to foster more cohesion between all efforts.

Equally important, Foxfire WUI has made physical and mental health, specifically PTSD early intervention/prevention strategies, a core focus of this curriculum. At Foxfire, we believe building a robust future workforce means addressing the issues that are depleting our current workforce.

Curriculum Overview

Semester One

The first semester focuses on primarily on providing students with a foundational knowledge base for:

  • Fire Science (weather, fuels, topography)
  • National Incident Management System and Incident Command System
  • Physical and nutritional health and wellness
  • Risk management and situational awareness
  • PTSD Early Preventions and Interventions

Foxfire WUI took the current NWCG units, restructured the units for cohesive structure and flow of this curriculum, and extended the information to make it more accessible for diverse learners and younger populations.

Semester Two

Realizing the lack of cohesion and interagency between wildfire suppression, prevention and planning, Foxfire decided to focus the second semester of the curriculum on Community Risk Reduction efforts. The content for these units will be original Foxfire WUI content, but supported by current observable best-practices further backed by research and proven to help reduce a community's risk to wildfire.

The most exciting part of this curriculum, however, will be the ownership it allows youth to take in helping to protect their community. At the end of the second semester, students will be expected to host a community-wide outreach program.
